Contemporary Connections: Women's Movement Group C, Section 2

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/02/us/new-womens-equal-rights-movement/

As we all know women have been fighting for many years to be seen as equals to men on the political, social, and financial level. The center piece for the image above shows a woman who looks to be very empowering as she has the American flag on her back and seems to be wearing some sort of battle type clothing on. The link will take you to an article and short video providing you insight on how the women of today are bringing back the ERA, properly known as the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA was a proposed amendment to the U.S constitution that guaranteed equal rights for women. Although the amendment received 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications, 5 states rescinded them thus making the proposed amendment ungratified. The woman behind this movement is Bettina Hager and her mission is to make sure women are protected from discrimination and to make sure women have every opportunity to succeed in society. She wants to raise awareness and put an end to pregnancy discrimination, pay equity, and violence against women.
You can connect this video to the discussion of the women's rights movements that have taken or are being taken place now in our world today. Their fight started way back in the late 1840's and are still fighting for equality. Hager mentioned pay equity and how it still isn't fair today as there is a 20% wage gap between men and women in the work force. Women make 80% of the full dollar that men make. In the last decade their have been more reports of violence against women and an increase in the number of abortions. Women get discriminated in a variety of ways, they just want people to notice and help contribute to the cause of ending this battle.Throughout the years of this particular movement, there has been the constant notion that women want to be recognized as better than men. but in all reality they just want to be treated as equals to men in our society. Women back then and women today want to be empowered enough to take what they believe is their right to equality.
