Recently a dance move called “dab” has become a popular trend. The article defines what the “dab” dance is and why many celebrities today perform it. The dance move was created by a popular rap group , Migos. The “dab” was brought on to the football field after Jeremy Hill scored a touchdown. Quarterback , Cam Newton then became the face of the “dab” after Migos had declared him the “dab daddy”. Newton has been seen performing it every time his teammates made it to the end zone. Celebrities now like Lebron James, Ellen, and even Hillary Clinton have been seen dabbing.
The dance move originated in the United States but has become viral reaching countries all over the world. The dance move has been very popular among athletes , it is a way for people to express the feeling of showing off or accomplishing something. This connects back to the class text where it states “Dance, which has always existed , in far-flung corners of culture and society, now finds a home in the virtual world of computers…” Trending dances now have become more easily recognize because of social media it is a quick and easy way we can express and share our cultures with others. Throughout the generations we see people grow more and more culturally diverse through the acknowledgement of other social perspectives. In a way this unties all cultures through the expression of dance.
I agree! Dance is a great way for people to express their culture and interests. The dab has become not just a dance move but a physical symbol of excitement and success. It makes people smile and laugh, and can also be used humorously. I'm sure that when Migos first introduced us to this dance move they did not expect it to take such flight. It is so simple that just about anyone can do it, making it more accepted into society and used often. I don't know if the move could ever be incorporated into "Dancing with the Stars", but considering they like to put their own interpretations of dancing into the show it just might!
ReplyDeleteDabbing is a pretty unique move in my opinion. At first when I saw it on television it was Cam Newton on Sports Center. I thought it was pretty silly, and had absolutely no idea that a lot of people would start incorporating these moves into their dances at clubs or wherever. I think it's pretty cool that it originated in our country and has grown to other countries worldwide. That's what the United States is known for, and I believe it sends a message that we are very creative and trend setting people. Dance definitely is a big part of our culture, not just through "song and dance" but through sports and social media as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point in how it "unties" all cultures through the expression of dance - almost everyone I know does the dab or at least knows of it. Whether they do it ironically or not, they are spreading the trend of the dance (and it's kind of funny.) It reminds me of all the dance trends that have come and gone: Soulja Boi, Gangam Style, Harlem Shake, NaeNae, etc. When you were aware of these dances, it showed in a way that you knew what was going on in the world; you were hip. If you see an old man doing the dab, that man is deemed to be instantly cool.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post! When I first heard of the dab I thought this would be a trend that wouldn't last more than a week, well I was wrong! This trend is spread to a variety of ages, I have seen my Kindergarten students do this dance move, as well as grandparents in the nursing home I volunteer at. I like the comment above that mentioned Soulja Boi, and the Harlem Shake these were trends that were poppin in my middle school and highschool years! Lets see how long the dab lasts! (I didn't know that Hilary Clinton dabs ahahha, thank you for including that!)
ReplyDeleteI agree! I think the "dab" is a dance move that everyone can identify with. Like someone had mentioned above, all ages use this move and know about it. Its funny to think about the dance moves that we used to dance to in middle and high school and see how they have changed and to think of what someone else will come up with next.
