"Contemporary Connections: Multiculturalism" Kaleigh Johnson, Group B, Sec 2

Lady Gaga's halftime show from 2017's Superbowl 51 was a clear representation of multiculturalism. This relates to the article in the sense of making each cultural identity included and recognized in our larger national identity. A quote from the article that I thought was significant was "When institutions reflect multiculturalism they legitimize, respect, and view diversity as a positive factor." I believe Lady Gaga did just that.

Another quote from the article was "America has always been characterized by diversity." The lyrics of Lady Gaga's song, "Born This Way" promotes inclusion of all identities. Her song celebrates how we should love ourselves and all of our unique qualities. It speaks of the embracement of all disabilities, sexuality's, races, genders and socioeconomic class. Furthermore, this idea is implemented by her multicultural backup dancers.

Another part of her performance was the use of the blue and red drones to symbolize republicans and democrats. It started with the drones separated by color, then intermixed which reminded me of the quote "the idea that diverse groups should be able to participate fully in the national culture while maintaining important aspects of their community cultures."

Lastly, throughout her performance she looked to promote an atmosphere where everyone felt included and welcome. An example of this is when she said, "How you doing tonight, Texas? America? World? We're here to make you feel good, you want to feel good with us?" Overall her performance was inspiring and truly tied back to the article in multiple ways.

  1. I agree with you, I think her performance embraced a multicultural perspective by having a variety of colors, skilled performers, and music that attempts to be relatable to the masses. She herself gave an outstanding performance that appealed to different populations during the superbowl in attempts to unite the crowd during this very divisive time.

I 100% agree with you, I have always been a fan of Lady Gaga not just because of her obvious talent but because of what she stands for, diversity, which, like you said, according to the article "America has always been characterized by diversity". I believe she succeeded in helping to start bring people and this nation back together with her performance.

  3. I agree with you completely. Lady GaGa represented multiculturalism perfectly by this performance, and chose a great time to do it, with the Superbowl being watched by millions of Americans. When I watched the performance I noticed her lyrics of her song "Born This Way" but did not pick up on the drones being separated and then mixing together. I think this shows positivity for the diversity and multiculturalism in America.
