"Contemporary Connections: Multiculturalism" Kiera DeCotes, Group B, Sec 1

The link is to a live performance (with lyrics) of "Loving Someone" by the 1975, which was released in February, 2016. The song touches upon different contemporary issues surrounding human connection, including the issues of racism, homophobia, sexism and more that are prevalent in society and in turn, dividing us and inciting hate. The lyrics, "We shouldn't have people afloat, if it was safer on the ground, we wouldn't be on boat" refers to the refugee crises that are occurring internationally, especially in places like Syria. While simple, these words clearly state that people would not leave their homelands if their lives were not in danger, and implies that we should be considerate and understanding to their situations.
This song reminds us that we are all human; we are diverse, we are flawed, but it should not matter. We should attempt to fill ourselves with love and respect for each other, despite our differences. It is the only way to progress not only as separate nations and communities, but also as a species. The above image reflects the message of the song, as multiple people with distinct differences are engaging and accepting one another through physical connection. It represents the idea that we must all work together to ensure a world that is fair, accepting and loving.
In the article, "Multiculturalism" from the Encyclopedia of American Studies, I found a few quotes that I believe are important and relevant to our society and the issues surrounding not only our past and present, but also our future.
"America has always been characterized by diversity." No matter our skin color, our religious beliefs, our sexuality, our gender, our cultural background, we are all American. The majority of us are descendants of immigrants and refugees who came to this country because they desired liberation from oppression. We should not turn our backs on those who are suffering. America prides itself on being a melting-pot of cultures and a land of opportunity for all. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, as many people in this country still face prejudice and intolerance. This leads to the next quote I found, which is, "Groups of people of color who have been in the United States since its inception, as well as new immigrant groups, are keeping the quest for democracy and justice in the United States alive by calling attention to the gap between the nation's ideals and its realities and by working to close it." What is important to take away from this quote is that Americans will continue to fight to fix its problems by leading with strength, compassion, hope and love.

This is a really in-depth analysis of the song and its relevance in today's world (it's a pretty good song, too). What I find interesting about this song is that it seems to be just a generic pop-rock love song at first glance, yet when examined more closely, it's clear that it's a song about not just about a tolerance of diversity but an encouragement for it. This song seems to embrace the idea that diversity creates a heterogeneous society, in which there are many different cultures, as opposed to a homogeneous society, in which a number of cultures blend into a single culture shared by all. Great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice of song! I think we're starting to see more songs that address issues like this in the world today, more and more celebrities are becoming figureheads of social movements and I think it's really influencing modern entertainment. It really shows the direction that society is going in today, stressing the importance of togetherness. Political songs are so important when it comes to social change and multiculturalism, so I'm glad you picked this example!
