"Contemporary Connections: Multiculturalism" Jordan Walts, Group B, Sec 1

The link that I chose was about the worldwide Women's Marches that took place recently. The photo shows how the march consisted of people of all genders and races fighting for the rights of women. I think that these marches were a very beautiful thing because it proves that no matter what, we are all able to come together to fight for something that we believe in.

In the article Multiculturalism from the Encyclopedia of American Studies, the section about The Civil Rights Movement reminded me of the Women's March in the sense that they're both about minorities fighting for their equal rights.

The article says that "...the civil rights movement began when a group of African American college students sat down at a lunch counter reserved for whites in a Woolworth's store in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 1, 1960, and refused to leave until they were served. A series of significant events had given rise to the civil rights movement, including the desegregation of public universities in the South and the border states, the desegregation of the armed forces by President Harry Truman with an executive order in 1948, and the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which declared de jure school segregation unconstitutional in 1954" (Banks). Obviously the Women's March and The Civil Rights Movement were fighting for different things, but the idea is all the same.

  1. I love looking at marches like these! For the women's march for example, it's not only just bringing women together, but it's a great way to bring different cultures and backgrounds together. I love how much movements can bond and merge such different communities together.

  2. I love how there is a wide variety of people at this Women's March. Both men and women of different races and cultures came together at this moment. In the article you can see signs fighting for women's issues, black lives matter, gay rights, and many other issues and it is very inspiring how they can come together
